With the rise in quality, the rising cost of documentaries has become a real issue. What's more, the rise of the documentary has also whetted appetites (athletes, agents, TV rights-holders).
As a result, new issues arise:
- Access to the stars:
- Ethics: paying athletes?
- How can you maintain editorial control if the athlete is also a co-producer?
- The same applies to organizers, federations, leagues, etc.
- Brand obligations and TV rights :
- Access to images when you're not the copyright holder.
- Little support for doc production and very expensive TV rights.
- Competition from global giants.
